Title: "Selfhood" presents identity portraits that focus on voices that have historically been threatened, silenced, and hidden. We all have something to say about our identity, and this exhibition offers space for five artists to share their histories and have their voices heard. What is “selfhood”? It is the quality that constitutes one’s individuality, our essential being, the part of us that makes us unique. We spend a lot of our lives developing a sense of self and figuring out who we are and what we stand for. That is inward-facing work, but when we look beyond ourselves, do we have a voice and a space to freely express who we are? Too often, that space is not there, stories are hidden, voices are silenced. Our sense of self is personal, but it is also connected to history. Who we are today is a product of what and who have come before, and knowing ourselves means getting to know, understanding, and telling our histories
I will display twelve images from my on-going Native American photography series, "Ways of My Ancestors - We Are Still Here," featuring the Nipmuc People and her sister tribes (Abenaki, Massachusett, Mohegan, Narragansett, Pequot, Pokanoket, and Wampanoag) of the Eastern Woodlands.

Title: "Celebrating Native American Culture and Voices in Marlborough"
This episode of Marlborough Minute on WMCT-TV featured an insightful roundtable discussion highlighting how the city serves its diverse residents through education and cultural programming focused on Native American communities. Guests included Scott Strong Hawk Foster, a photographer from the local Nipmuc tribe whose powerful exhibit "Ways of My Ancestors - We Are Still Here" is on display at the Marlborough Public Library until March 31st. His stark black backdrop portraits beautifully capture the regalia and spirit of Eastern Woodland Native Americans, Andre StrongBearHeart Gaines, Jr., Cultural Stewart and Creative Director of No Loose Braids, and Sara Bellsle, Library Director.
Both Scott and Andre StrongBearHeart Gaines, Jr. emphasized the need to counter pervasive misconceptions that Native Americans no longer exist in modern society in authentic ways. As Scott shared, "We don't dress like this every day, but this is how our ancestors dressed and we're honoring our ancestors." By providing vital platforms for indigenous voices and stories, institutions like WMCT-TV and the Marlborough Public Library play a crucial role in promoting understanding, representation and respect for the rich diversity of Native American communities. As the roundtable affirmed, these are perspectives that have been far too long suppressed, ignored or romanticized. Continuing to amplify them is essential to an inclusive, educated society.

Title: "Monatash - Indigenous Arts and Artists from Southern New England" In the Algonkian dialect spoken by Indigenous peoples of Southern New England, there is no word for ‘art.’ The title of this exhibition asks us to consider how Western concepts of art may be expanded beyond narrow definitions to be more inclusive, culturally relevant and holistic. “Monatash”means abundance--in many beautiful, varied, and rich forms. Interrogating the colonial narratives of disappearance, while honoring ancestral bonds, these traditional and contemporary works from the tribal homelands now known as Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut by area Indigenous artists powerfully express a lived history that is always present and perpetually abundant--offering us many pathways into a future where all people shall walk in justice and peace.
This exhibition displayed the work/craftmanship of six Indigenous arts and artists from Southern New England. Eight images from my on-going Native American photgraphy series, "Ways of My Ancestors - We Are Still Here" featuring the Indigenous Peoples of Southern New England were on display in The Mary L. Fifield Art Gallery.
